Description/Tasting Notes:
 Shottesbrooke was an early pioneer of this variety in McLaren Vale and was the first producer in the region to release a 100% varietal Merlot. Merlot is as ideal variety in the Mediterranean type climate of the region as it allows full flavour development so unsurprisingly Merlot is a major variety in their vineyards. The Merlot is grown on deep sandy loam soils of the company's McLaren Flat vineyards. The vines have minimal irrigation and moderate soil fertility, which results in low yields but concentrated flavours. It is fermented in roto and static fermenters with pump over cap management and matured for 15 months in 1 year old American and French oak barrels before bottling. The Merlot is cherry red with the purple hue but that is softening to brick red as it matures. The aromas are of berry fruit flavours of cherries & black currants with some peppery spice. On the palate it is medium bodied with rich berry fruit flavours. Lovely velvety mouth feel with fine oak tannins. A great food wine.
